Covid Reflecting

Thanksgiving dinner 2020.jpg

These last 9 months have given many of us time to think, to nest and hibernate, to take care of the others around us, and to be creative in our own ways. I have been grateful for this time with Tom and with myself to discover the pleasures of living with little to distract us. We are both introverts and have just about everything we need right here in our own small bubble. Of course, the political environment remains agonizingly painful and racial injustices wrong beyond measure, but my service on nonprofit boards grounds me in the troubles of the world outside our small, protected habitat. I’ve read COVID-related relief proposals from craft artists who must decide between paying rent on their studios that house all of their equipment or paying rent on their apartment so the decision finds them “couch surfing” with friends. Others report eating every other day. Also as a volunteer, I review community foundation grant proposals that focus on regional food insecurity and homelessness, domestic violence, financial woes of families and organizations, medical needs...all of which put my security and privilege into sharp perspective. Enough said today. We will eat our Thanksgiving dinner in the last warm rays of fall before winter sets in.
